Foraminifera

Single-celled, mostly marine protista encased in a calcareous test (an exoskeleton shell), usually sand-sized. Their rapid evolution permits high-resolution biostratigraphic correlation and Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments. Certain benthic foraminifera delineate paleoenvironments very well.
