First Appearance Datum

(often abbreviated as FAD):The initial appearance of a species in the rock record. In outcrop this datum is easily determined. In offshore well samples, running samples downhole, it is usualy difficult to discern in a normal stratigraphic sequence (unless the section is overturned or thrust faulting has occurred).
