Acritarchs

Spherical microfossils with thick complex organic walls (fossil cysts) composed of spores or pollen, probably the resting stage of planktic algae. First appeared about 1600 Ma. Primarily used as biostratigraphic and paleoecologic markers in Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks.
