"What is a Well?" Work Group
Project Description
A number of PPDM Association members have expressed interest in funding an initiative to develop baseline definitions for the structural components of a well and the relationships between these components. Baseline definitions for life cycle stages will also be developed to help industry understand how well entities evolve over the life time of a well. These baseline definitions will be used as the basis for comparison with the specific definitions used by key industry data providers, aggregators, and consumers in the US and Canada.
The first phase of the work group will focus on the baseline definitions and mappings to key regulatory agencies in the US and Canada. Later phases will examine how the data is handled by data vendors and software vendors.
Objectives and Vision
Over the years, the business entity that we call a "well" has become increasingly complicated; corporate and regulatory processes have evolved to manage this increased complexity in different ways. The end result has been a mixture of systems and data sources that are difficult to integrate and use effectively.
Our objective is to create a set of baseline definitions that map to entity definitions and business rules used by various organizations and departments in our industry. This will create a "Rosetta stone" framework that will allow industry to understand how well entities relate to each other.
Charter: Revised September 10, 2008
Benefits
Understanding the critical differences in terms of the definition of a well and the implications of these differences will lead to industry-wide improvements in data management, exchange, quality, and integration.
