Well Operations Work Group

Contribute to the Well Operations Work Group Forum.

Executive summary

A work group was formed in collaboration with the E&P Industry, other standards bodies and professional associations to enhance the data model to support daily well tour information. The work group has two phases, which will likely overlap in time.

Phase I will provide mappings between PPDM 3.7 and the well daily tour reports provided by CAODC and other organizations. PPDM 3.8 will be extended to provide support for these data exchange formats as required by the work group.

Phase II identifies additional gaps in the information required by the E&P Industry to appropriately track and analyze well operations. Later phases to incorporate this missing functionality will be set up as needed, based on the results of this work group.

Status

This work group has created a charter document and has begun work. If you would like to participate, please contact the PPDM Association at info@ppdm.org.

Benefits

Three key points in the well life cycle are facilitated by standardizing well tour information.

  1. Planning and preparation: During this stage it is useful to compare engineering information from nearby or similar wells. Often, this data is only available as Acrobat pdf files, a format not intended to support data analysis and comparison. Standardized, well structured data formats support more effective and complete analysis.
  2. Ongoing well operations: Often, the operator is provided with formatted reports about activities. These reports are not structured for easy analysis and comparison, as they are often provided in Acrobat pdf files. In many cases, the vendor retains the original digital information; these vendors charge to provide copies of reports to operators and other parties and may or may not retain the digital information for archival purposes. A standard data model would allow the operator to retain ownership and control of this valuable asset.
  3. Acquisition and Divestment: Engineering information supporting detailed analysis and due diligence is provided to prospective buyers; this data generally includes the well tour data. This process can be greatly facilitated through data that is standardized in structure and content.

Scope

Business needs exist in several well operations domains. The potential scope for a PPDM well operations work group or project could be enormous. We will address the requirements in phases, starting with a quick win such as the well tour reports.

Phase I will provide a mapping between PPDM 3.7 and the CAODC well tour report (and other regional formats if provided and required by the work group). PPDM 3.8 will be extended to provide full support for these data formats.

Phase II will identify additional gaps in the information required by the E&P Industry to appropriately track and analyze well operations.

Later phases to incorporate this missing functionality will be set up as needed, based on the results of this work group. This functionality may eventually include full support for real time operational data, depending on the requirements of the work group and PPDM Membership.
