Work Group Status

This work group is complete.

Executive Summary

The PPDM Well Log work group was formed to review and enhance the Well Log subject area. Since this subject area exists in earlier versions of the PPDM relational model, this work group focused on updating the model to support functionality that has become increasingly important over the past several years.

Work Group Status

This work group is not actively meeting, but reviews member requests for information or enhancements to the model.

Benefits

Enhancing the well log subject area will allow geoscientists to store, retrieve and manage well log data in ways that more accurately reflect business processes, that support and facilitate the adoption of new technology and that recognize and treat well log products such as the original data, as a valuable corporate asset.

Full data storage of raw data allows not only preservation of both the well log depth (or time) and response values, but also all the parameter information. These parameters are required for later well log analysis using state of the art processing algorithms.

Improved accuracy and clarity in the model reflects actual business practices, both during data capture and later data input and management procedures will enable more thorough descriptions of well log data to be captured. This in turn permits analytical applications to become more interoperable as they are able to share the same data model.

Scope

  1. Handle interpreted curves
  2. Support relationship between calculated or derived log data and the original or predecessor
  3. Improve acquisition details
  4. Ability to handle multi dimensional curves
  5. Capture some summary data about the actual curve values, since the digits of the curves are typically not in the database
  6. Types of processing applied to the log, often called properties in well log files. (TVD corrected, shifted, depth matched, calibrated, over sampled)
  7. Well logs used as input for a composite digital log
  8. Support ownership (or source) of log curve name sets (dictionaries). Include parameter dictionaries
  9. Support hierarchy and granularity of curve names (or mnemonics) and types (or classes) to allow query at whichever level is appropriate to the user.
  10. Support alias names, codes and identifiers for curve names
  11. Support optional storage of well log digits
  12. Support storage of raster log, including header information about the rasterization
  13. Support optional tool set descriptions
  14. Support all types of input / output formats
  15. Support storage of original log data in the original format (RM module)
  16. Review fit for Mud resistivity information - how does it work in the revised model?
  17. Units of measure fit with the log module
  18. Entitlements fit with log access / rights
  19. Describe details about digitization of curves (as in WELL LOG DIGIT CURVE)
  20. Add support for irregularly sampled curves
  21. Add support for non depth indexes (such as time)
  22. Recognize By-pass logs - a log created in a portion of the well bore that is ultimately abandoned
