Metadata Mapping Work GroupContribute to the Metadata Mapping Forum. Executive summaryPPDM Association is a not-for-profit organization that develops and maintains standards for the Resource Industry. With over 100 member companies comprised of petroleum businesses, governments, data vendors, software vendors and service firms, the Association provides a roundtable process to bring experts together to build useful, business-driven standards. Our industry needs to define spatial and non-spatial data in terms of what it is, when it was created, what we call it, among many other attributes; these assist in sharing of data among users and software. Information management organizations are more advanced at managing data than other organizations are at managing textural information. Data and textural information have no value until one puts them together and creates knowledge. Thus relating data to other information sources such as rig reports, regulatory changes and interpretation practices is imperative to be effective and efficient. Meta data standards, such as the Dublin Core and the FGDC and ISO spatial meta data sets provide us with useful standardized mechanisms for creating and sharing descriptive information about our documents, maps, projects and knowledge repositories. But shared data is still just data, what about the knowledge learned from the data? No matter how many attributes are assigned to a piece of data, the full context of data collection, environment, interpretation, etc. can not be transferred. Sharing a best practice used by one organization that results in a different nontraditional interpretation may be the difference in an exploration decision. Through this project, the PPDM Association will develop a series of recommendations for using meta data standards in conjunction with a PPDM data base. Best practice recommendations will define how the meta data standards should be used, and mappings will show how data that is stored in a meta data repository should be extracted from a standard PPDM implementation. Project ObjectivesValuable process improvements will be realized through the integration of spatial information, records management information and structured data stores in PPDM format. The PPDM Association, working collaboratively with its members, will develop mechanisms that will employ standards to support the use of existing meta data standards in conjunction with PPDM. |
