Business Rules Work GroupProject DescriptionThe E&P business is very complex; managing data properly requires that data be understood and evaluated through business experts and expert knowledge systems. Thousands of business rules typically govern the data management operations of most E&P companies; unfortunately, these rules are rarely documented or applied consistently, making data management and integration a very difficult process. This work group will focus on the business rules that are important to data management, including data management “best practices”, data quality, transactions and transformations. An environment and infrastructure will be created that can be used to submit and validate business rules, or to extract industry rules that are applicable to a company. Objectives and VisionInitially, the group will focus on creating the framework that will be used to submit and validate business rules. A sample set of rules will be developed to test the framework and provide a helpful starting point. Methods to query, understand, extract and use the rules will also be considered. Ultimately, the workgroup hopes that industry will collaboratively collect and collate a comprehensive set of business rules that are appropriate for companies of all sizes and in all regions. Long term sustainability will be an important focus for the deliverables. BenefitsA common set of public business rules may be used to establish “standardized” quality metrics that can be established as part of a data delivery agreement, acquisition or service level agreement. A publicly available set of business rules can be used to measure and improve the quality of data in companies world-wide. Vendor products that use these rules will become increasingly valuable and robust. SponsorshipCurrent sponsors
