Work Group Status

This work group is not actively meeting, but reviews member requests for information or enhancements to the model.

Executive summary

Biostratigraphic analysis is commonly used in offshore exploration and development to determine the age and depositional history of an area. In 2001, members requested that a Biostratigraphy / Paleontology module be added to the PPDM data model. Participation and submissions have come from PDVSA, MMS, Woodside Energy, AGSO, Rakhit Consulting, the GSC and Ecopetrol.

Several modules are being developed by the Biostratigraphy work group:

  • Fossil descriptions: Provides a description of fossils and assemblages
  • Ecozones and climates: Supports environmental descriptions
  • Paleo reporting: Supports biostratigraphic analysis summaries
  • Lithologic samples: Implements support for general sample analysis

Status

The alpha model has been completed and is being published for work group testing. If you would like to participate in alpha testing, please contact the PPDM Association at info@ppdm.org.

Benefits

  • Companies will be able to replace existing spreadsheet systems and paper filing systems with a single standardized repository
  • Standardization of key information such as species names will allow greater interoperability between data stores
  • Will be able to map biostratigraphic data against petrophysical logs
  • Improved ability to perform regional studies that cross different reports and database

Scope

  1. Taxonomy
  2. Depositional environment
  3. Stratigraphic age
  4. Observations and interpretations
  5. Core description
  6. Sample description
  7. Other observed structural characteristics
  8. Security / confidentiality
  9. Narrative comments
