PPDM Association Delivers Results from Data Exchange 2002 Project

Calgary, Canada, January 14, 2003 – The Public Petroleum Data Model Association announced today the release of results from the Data Exchange 2002 Project. Industry has partnered with data vendors, software developers, information management providers, and the PPDM Association to combine their collective expertise and experience to develop data exchange standards in the form of XML Schema.

The Data Exchange Project was initiated to facilitate the transfer of data between organizations within the energy industry. The project addresses the tremendous need for simple and open standards for exchanging data over the Internet. Through this initiative, the Association has provided an inexpensive and simple solution to what previously has been a complex and expensive proposition. Greg Hess, Vice President, Technology & Business Development at Kelman Technologies (KTI) explains,

"KTI has successfully implemented XML with clients for the seamless exchange of data between disparate systems. The PPDM Association set of XML schemas facilitates exchange of data effectively. As we grow with this technology, standard XML schemas will support the development process and make deployment more effective. Success will depend upon the level of support from industry leaders as more companies adopt XML technology. With the increasing need to exchange data, the PPDM Data Exchange Project becomes ever more important. KTI is excited about the opportunities and benefits XML has to offer."

The Association has provided a set of publicly available data exchange standards based on Extensible Markup Language (XML) and XML Schema. The Association also provides value-added samples that utilize open source technologies such as Java, and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP). These samples demonstrate how to implement the XML Schemas when exchanging data. The deliverables developed during the Data Exchange 2002 Project include:

  • 14 XML Schemas: Format for the data exchange transaction standards
  • Sample Packages: Show how to create, transform, validate and exchange XML documents
  • Data Maps: Between the PPDM data model and the XML Schemas developed by the Association
  • Architectural Principals Document: Documents the project goals, methodologies, and deliverables

All deliverables are available at http://www.ppdm.org/standards/exchange/index.html. The XML schemas have been registered with http://www.xml.org/.

The PPDM Association, in conjunction with Industry, has developed a charter to continue this collaborative effort and to ensure the ongoing success of the Data Exchange Project into 2003. This charter is available at http://chat.ppdm.org/ftp/public/exchange/XML_Charter_2003.pdf.

The PPDM Association is an international non-profit organization through which members worldwide cooperate to develop standards as a foundation for managing information as an essential asset in the global resource business. Representing over 100 oil and gas companies, vendors, and regulatory agencies worldwide, the Association delivers a vendor-independent standard data model and data exchange schemas. The Association has headquarters in Calgary and an office in Houston.
