PPDM V3.5 Petroleum Data Model Released

Calgary, Canada, January 17, 2001 – The Public Petroleum Data Model (PPDM) Association announced today the release of its Version 3.5 petroleum data model to membership organizations worldwide. The major release adds 7 new modules to the business-driven petroleum data model and significant enhancements to another 8 modules.

"Explorationists require the ability to zoom into geologic areas. By linking relational data from the PPDM model with GIS analysis tools, petroleum companies and government agencies can provide their professionals with easily accessed, uniform, low cost integrated data management, base mapping and data analysis solutions," said Scott Beaugrand, the Association’s CEO.

With support from the Work Group process, the new release encapsulates 2.5 years of intense model development and testing with a significantly improved set of deliverables which include substantial additions to technical data definitions, release documentation and diagrams, support module reference guides, sample data sets, data mappings and spatially enabling support.

Major improvements in the Land module enable the administration and management of Contracts which affect virtually every aspect of the oil and gas industry, from exploration to production. New Land coverage in Version 3.5 includes provisions, partnerships and interest sets, obligations, accounting and operating procedures, spatial or aerial extent and legal disputes. Defined Land structures include facilities, land rights acquisition, land surface restrictions and records management.\

Principle subject areas have been added and defined in the Stratigraphy portion of the model to provide and manage information related to the collection of Geologic data, information and interpretations. New Stratigraphic subject areas support classification, name sets and areas, stratigraphic units, surfaces, faults, stratigraphic columns, aliases, correlation and multiple picks. Additionally, defined Stratigraphic structures include named areas, projects and records management.

Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, the PPDM Association is a not-for-profit standards organization for data management in the global petroleum industry. Members include oil and gas companies, government agencies, software and data vendors, service companies and consultants. Member participation through the change management process provides the Association with information to ensure the model meets the business needs of users internationally.
